We believe screening for oral cancer is an essential part of any regular dental examination. In a conventional oral exam, we visually inspect and palpate the lips, cheeks, tongue and floor of your mouth under white light. The VELscope lets us take that examination a step further. VELscope is a handheld device that dentists and hygienists can use to help with early detection of a wide variety of oral diseases, including pre-cancer and cancer. The VELscope hand piece emits a safe blue light that excites the tissues inside your mouth, causing them to fluoresce. Healthy tissue will appear green when viewed through the special optics of the hand piece, while unhealthy tissue will be dark. The advantage of using VELscope is that it can detect abnormal areas before they become visible to the naked eye.
